Why Is Timing Important to Virality?

Kyle • May 17, 2011 • Comments View Comments

We all know timing is everything. It was never more evident in why our Mother’s Day “Flowers For Mom” app went viral (see graph lower right).

One of our tried and true formulas we practice here is:

Timing + Emotion + Action = Viral

Timing: We released the app on May 3rd, four days before Mother’s Day. It’s important to catch the excitement of the holiday before it actually arrives, but not launch too early, when enthusiasm may not be there yet.

Emotion: Who doesn’t love their mom?

Action: We offered a way for users to gift virtual flowers and celebrate moms for their unconditional love and care.

In 4 days, we saw the Flowers for Mom app generate over 500,000 users who shared 1.3 million stream stories.
